Blue Spirulina Pina Colada Smoothie

Blue Spirulina Pina Colada Smoothie

First there was a global pandemic that forced us to stay home. Now that we’re all vaccinated and we seem to be safely coming out of Omicron, there’s an entirely new situation that is making travel difficult, and that’s the soaring price of gas and travel in general now that people are able to travel again.

All this to say that any possibility of going on a trip to some place warm is still just a pipe dream at this point.

I do hope to get on a plane at some point in the future to go to a warm and sunny destination, but till then, I’ll just have to go there with my taste buds instead.

If you haven’t yet been to Kevin & Kevin Juice in Chinatown, you really need to check it out. It’s one of the most instagrammable locations in the city. They have these cool hanging chairs that make for super cute selfies, and they usually have a DJ spinning some cool tunes. The menu is fresh and there are lots of vegan and vegetarian options.

They make their own juices on site, and those juices go into their very fun cocktails. But they have also just started bottling their juices and selling them through a local plant-based grocery delivery service called Vegano.

They recently sent me a box full of juices (you can also do a juice cleanse, by the way, if that’s your jam), and I had to taste-test them all live. One of my favourites was the Blue Magik: Lemon, Pineapple, Blue Spirulina, Coconut Water, Pink Himalayan Sea Salt, Chia Seed, and Maple Syrup for sweetness.

Blue Spirulina is an algae that’s both good for your gut health (it contains chlorophyll), it has protein, b-vitamins, and antioxidants. Plus it has this really pretty blue colour that makes me think of Hawaii. And it tastes a bit like a pina colada, so I thought I’d throw it into a pina colada smoothie.

Of course you could add some rum to this to make it a cocktail, but it was 10 am when I was trying this, so….yeah. I thought I’d maybe skip the booze and stick to just a pina colada smoothie this time. But, no judgement! In fact, Kevin & Kevin has one on the menu, so you could just go get one there.
