Plant-Based Bakery Cafes in Vancouver

Plant-Based Bakery Cafes in Vancouver

I’ve often said how lucky we are in Vancouver to have such wonderful variety of plant-based eateries, and it’s very, very true.

Recently, I started thinking about all plant-based bakeries and I thought it might be helpful for me to make a list. For clarity, in order to be on this list, the place must be:

  • 100% vegan or plant-based
  • Make (at least some) of its own goodies in house
  • A place where you can sit and enjoy a lil bevvie with your baked goods
  • Must be located in the city of Vancouver, proper

If I’ve missed any, please let me know in the comments!

 To Live For

to live for croissants

Look, I’m a stan for To Live For. They’ve now been open for 3 years, and every time my friend Chantal texts me “meet me at the bakery” I know exactly where she means. Erin Ireland has done such a great job with this place; all of the baked goods are exceptional, though I’m mostly partial to the croissants, and there are breakfast sandwiches and lots of great drinks, too. The location itself on Nanaimo St is bright and sunny and there’s both indoor and outdoor seating, and it’s super kid-friendly to boot.

Vogue Cakes

vegan eclair

It’s teeny tiny and most of their business is grab-and-go. Can you get a coffee here? Sure. There’s not really anywhere to drink it, though, other than the few cafe tables outside. However, everything here is 100% plant based and Sara is an artiste when it comes to decorating cakes. They’re so impressive. The other thing that impresses me here is the eclairs. What witchraft she uses to make a choux pastry without any eggs, I’ll never know (and I’ve asked her).

AM Cafe

am cafe scones

This one is a bit of a hidden gem. Despite it being just off of Broadway right near the King’s Gate Mall, it’s in a bit of a side street and off the beaten path. The owners, Lindsay and Ollie, are lovely humans and what they are able to produce out of their tiny kitchen is nothing short of miraculous. This place is more of a brunch spot, but they do make quite a few of their own baked goods, like these insanely delicious scones. They’ve also just expanded into the space next door, so there’s lots of seating. Well worth seeking out.

Whisk Matcha Cafe/Level V

Located in that weird triangle that makes up Main St, Kingsway and Broadway, Whisk Matcha Cafe specializes in…. you guessed it… matcha.  You can get a variety of matcha drinks here, but also, they make their matcha and hojicha baked goods as well, or treats that pair well with your matcha or hojicha…. Highly recommend if you are a matcha lover. Just a note, not a lot of seating here, just a few tables.

Bonus Bakery

Bonus has been off the map for a while, since they closed their location on Georgia St. They have still been doing orders and also supplying local coffee shops (like Superbolt in Kits) with their baked goods, but they haven’t had a cafe for a while. Recently, they opened up in–wait for it–the Yellow Cab depot on Clark Drive. I’m gonna be real, it’s a weird location, but the shop itself is very cute and they’ve done a nice job. There are only a couple of tables here, so this is mostly a grab-and-go location. Bonus is widely known for their cookies, especially. And donuts.

Feast & Fallow

feast and fallow

Feast & Fallow was the one on this list that I had never been to until I started researching this list. Located on 41st Ave, right by Oakridge, I understood why. This area is under heavy construction, and I have been avoiding it for that reason. Parking was a pain. You can’t park on 41st, so you have to try to find parking on the side streets and that’s a challenge. I was there on a Saturday and the place was packed. There were few, if any seats available. My guess is, it will be less busy during the week and their main clientele are locals who can walk there. They have both baked goods here along with their coffee, and they also do a full brunch on the weekends.

Edible Flours

Low key, this place has been in business since 2011. Located between the London Drugs and the IGA on Broadway near Maple (and the Kits Farmers Market) this plant-based cafe also offers gluten free options. Everything is plant-based, but not everything is gluten free. Still, a great choice for those of you, who, like me, have gluten-free friends.

Honorable mentions

Nuttea

nuttea waffles

This is a plant-based cafe/coffee shop. They specialize in bubble teas, and the cloud-like foamy topping is made from nuts, not dairy. The drinks here are so creative and I love them all. They do have some treats here, though primarily from other places They do make their own treats as well, like delicious waffles, which also happen to be gluten free. There are just a couple of tables here, but it’s located in the heart of Kits on 4th Ave with lots of good shopping nearby.

The Grind

the grind

This is a brand new cafe that just opened near the seawall and English Bay. It’s all vegan. They don’t make their own baked goods, but they do bring in delicious options like To Live For and Bonus, so they are well worth checking out.

Who’s in for a plant-based cafe/bakery crawl???
