4 Must-Attend Food Festivals this Summer

Ah, summer. It’s only a few more weeks until the May long weekend, which always marks the official beginning of summer for us here on the west coast.

For me, though, summer doesn’t officially kick off until both Michael and I are done school in late June. Then the fun gets real, yo!

The end of June is just 6 weeks away, which means it’s time to start making plans for July and August. Last summer, we were barely home, spending time in Squamish, Whistler, the Sunshine Coast, and Seattle.

We’re in the process of mapping out our summer, and there will no doubt be some unplanned trips, as well. But there’s one thing you can be sure of: beaches and food will be a big part of our summer plans.

Here are some amazing food festivals this summer that we would love to hit up:

Food Cart Festivals: Now heading into its third year, the Vancouver Food Cart Fest takes place every weekend starting June 28, in a large lot, just on the other side of the Olympic Village. One of my favourite Sunday activities is to ride my bike on the Seawall over there, and then stuff my face with awesome eats. I’d love to do some further abroad food carts this summer, as well, like in the mecca of food carts: Portland.

Farmer’s Markets: This past weekend marked the opening of the Trout Lake Farmer’s Market (which is arguably Vancouver’s largest, although I seldom go, because it’s a drive). I’m most often at the Kits one or the West End, especially in early June, when the garlic scapes are in season! But you could make a whole summer of travelling and visiting Farmer’s Markets. The best one in the province has got to be Pentciton, but the Squamish one is pretty impressive, too.

Midway food at the Calgary Stampede (or a rodeo near you): If you want to experience carnie food, the Calgary Stampede is your destination for mini donut popsicles, red velvet fried chicken, donut grilled cheese, jalapeño mini donuts, cactus burgers, or the Peanut Butter Kabob: a quartered PB&J sandwich on a skewer with a deep-fried Reese’s Peanut Butter cup in between each quarter. Yup. Read more here.

Seafood Festivals: Oysters and mussels and lobsters, oh my! I love living in a province where we have such an amazing abundance of fresh seafood. There are a few festivals here that celebrate this goodness: The BC Shellfish Festival in Comox (here’s a contest to win a trip there), FEAST in Tofino (on now until the end of the month), and the Tofino Food and Wine Festival.
