S’mores Popcorn & Captain America: Civil War [Contest]

What happened to summer?

The kids are back at school, and I’ve already broken out my Hunters and long sleeved shirts.

As sad as I am to see summer go, there is a coziness to this time of the year as the leaves begin to turn and the temperatures go down.

It means comfort foods, and cozy evenings inside snuggled up on the couch catching up on movies.

I have two things today to help you get into the spirit of fall. The first is a recipe for a movie snack that will knock your socks off. The second is a contest to win a copy of Captain America: Civil War and some fun Captain America swag and and movie snacks.

The contest is courtesy of Telus Optik TV; you must be an Optik subscriber to enter. You can actually see the movie 10 days before everyone else if you are an Optik subscriber.

The snacks? A classic summer campfire treat turned into a movie snack. Who doesn’t love the marshmallow/ graham cracker/ chocolate combo of a S’more? Well, it gets even better when you put it together with popcorn.

It’s everything; sweet, salty, crunchy, awesome.

Make a big batch, and curl up with your sweetie under the blanket and witness the epic battle between Captain America and Iron Man.

S’mores Popcorn

  • 1/3 cup unpopped popcorn
  • 1/4 cup chocolate chips
  • 4 tbsp butter, divided
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup mini marshmallows
  • 7 graham crackers

  1. Pop the popcorn using whatever method you like. I have an air popper.
  2. Once the popcorn is popped, dress it with 2 tbsp of melted butter and the salt and toss well. Toss in the marshmallows as well, and crush the graham crackers into smaller bits about the same size as the popcorn and with your hands and throw those in as well.
  3. Spread the popcorn out onto a large cookie sheet.
  4. Place the chocolate chips and 1 tbsp of butter in a microwave-safe dish and place it in the microwave. Microwave it at 30 second intervals, stirring each time, until it’s smooth. Add a little more butter if needed–you want the chocolate to be drippable, but not too runny or it will never set.
  5. Drizzle the melted chocolate over your pan of popcorn. Allow to set, placing in the fridge if necessary. Once the chocolate has set, break it up, and place it back in a big bowl to serve.

$5 DIY Gift for Popcorn Lovers

Eeeek! It’s three days to Christmas!

You may be smugly sitting in your perfectly-decorated living room with a cup of Bailey’s hot chocolate and your feet up, all your shopping done. Or maybe you’re still running around looking for things and battling the crowds at the mall. Or maybe, you haven’t even started…

Here’s a quick and simple DIY gift for the popcorn-lover on your list. Bonus! It won’t cost you more than $5!

DIY 5 popcorn lovers gift

Here’s how it breaks down:

  • Popcorn bucket: $2 at Wal-mart
  • Bag of popcorn (can make several gifts): less than $2 (from your grocery store–buy the no-name brand)
  • Paper lunch bags*: $1 (at the dollar store, will make several gifts)
  • Glass shaker containers: 2/$1 (at the dollar store)
  • Seasoning**: made from ingredients you already have lying around the house

DIY popcorn lovers gift

Here’s how to make your gift for popcorn lovers:

  1. Take 6 paper lunch bags out of the package, and place them inside the popcorn bucket.
  2. Measure out 2 cups of popcorn kernels, and put them into a nice, pretty bag. As an alternative to this, you could buy some snack-sized ziploc bags at the dollar store (again, $1), and measure out 1/3 cup of popcorn into each.
  3. Create your popcorn seasoning, and fill up one of the shaker bottles with it. You could even make a couple of different kinds and include more than one (instructions follow below**).
  4. Write a note with directions to your friend, or you can use mine (see below). Include the note in the popcorn bucket, as well. Wrap it up pretty, and gift!

*I stopped buying microwave popcorn quite a while ago. I was a bit scared of what was in there. If you know the person has an air popper, you can skip the lunch bags. But making popcorn in the microwave has been my go-to method for the last couple of years, and it’s awesome. Read all about it here.

**Popcorn seasoning:

Get creative! Here are a couple of tutorials for making your own that I pinned: Popcorn Seasoning Kit, and 50 Flavoured Popcorn Recipes. Here’s one I really like from Thug Kitchen. As a bonus, it’s vegan, as it’s made with nutritional yeast (or nooch), which has a nutty, parmesan-like flavour. Combine: 2 tbsp nutritional yeast, 1 tsp dried basil, 1 tsp dried dill, 1 tsp garlic powder, 1 tsp salt.
