3 Charities to Support this Mother’s Day

I don’t often write posts on my blog that are not recipes or directly tied to food. But a few Mother’s Day related charity events have come across my radar these last couple of weeks, and I thought you should know about them. All three are close to my heart.

May 6: Mama-ste: A Community Yoga Event Celebrating Women and Moms

Michael was born in BC Women’s Hospital, and the staff that worked there was amazing. He had some health problems at birth; his doctor called it “a spectacular heart murmur.” There was a lot of worry–given that I’d never had a baby before, and wasn’t quite sure what to do, and that I’d just been through 24 hours of labour. I really can’t say enough about how great and wonderfully supportive the staff was. I’ve donated to them on many occasions, but this week, they are hosting yoga classes by donation. The classes will be taught by Lululemon instructors, and the venue is the False Creek Community centre. The minimum donation is $20. it’s a great cause, and hey–you might find your zen! May 11: All You Can Eat Pancake Brunch

Mother’s Day is always a strange day for me. I love spending the day doing special stuff with my son. But I miss my own mother, whom I lost to cancer 6 years ago. Michael and I usually always go out for pancakes on Mother’s Day. Later in the day, I like to drive out to the cemetery and leave some flowers on my mom’s grave.

This year, we’ll be attending a Pancake Brunch in Surrey to benefit The Ride to Conquer Cancer. This all-you-can-eat breakfast costs just $8 for adults, and $5 for kids, and takes place from 10:30am-2pm at Sullivan Community Centre, 6306 152nd in Surrey. Tickets are available at the door.

Until May 12: Pinkies for Preemies

Also benefitting BC Women’s (did I mention I was born there, too? Yeah. It was called the Grace General Hospital then. Guess what my official first name is? My mom named me after the hospital), this is a social media fundraiser in partnership with Telus. Take a photo of your pinkie together with loved one’s, and post it to Instagram or Twitter using the hashtag #pinkiesforpreemies. Telus will donate $10 for every photo to the NICU at BC Women’s.
