New Summer Patio Menu at Dockside

Ever since daylight savings time last week, the weather has really smartened up. There were some weird snowy bits in February and early March, but since last Sunday, the weather has been warm and spring-like.

There are other signs of spring, too: crocuses, and the slightest tinge of a pink haze on the cherry blossom trees. Spring is heading towards us, full bore, cornering on two wheels.

Vancouver is a city that takes its patios seriously. “Patioing” is a verb here. If it’s warm and sunny, you’ll find us parked on a patio somewhere with a cold one.

We have some pretty splendiferous patios in my neighbourhood. But one of my all-time favourite patios in the city is the one at the Dockside Restaurant on Granville Island. It’s awesome because it’s like an outdoor lounge, complete with cabanas and couches. Also, their mojitos rock.

I had the opportunity to get a sneak peek at their new summer patio menu for 2014 earlier this week. Chef Simon James McNeil has been with the restaurant about two years, and he was very excited to show off his new menu.

Dockside makes 95% of their food, including sauces, in-house. They do get some bread brought in, namely from Ble Bakery (formerly La Baguette). “Dockside is basically a really big ‘mom and pop’ operation,” says Chef Simon.

His summer dishes focus on light, seasonal ingredients, relying heavily on local produce and sustainably harvested seafood. Chef Simon enjoys playing with salt and sweet, so you’ll find that pairing in many of his dishes.

What says "summer" more than an ice cream float?? This one is rhubarb, garnished with a macaron. Perfect for sipping with your sweetie.

Simon says "this is a dish we're really proud of." This play on tacos is called Nam Prik "Cow": seared beef tenderloin with chili mango, lime avocado, and sesame su choy, served with asian steam buns.

By the way, I’m not the only one that loves Dockside’s Patio. Today, they won #1 Patio in the city for the third time running in the Georgia Straight’s Golden Plate Awards.

Come on, patio weather!!
