Holiday Bracer Cocktail

Well, hello, Friday! Not just any Friday, you guys, the Friday before Christmas.

What does this mean? Today is the official last day of work and school for many of you. Me? I plan on submitting my final grades today to BCIT, and then being DONE work until 2015!

Cause for a celebratory cocktail? I think so, yes!

This recipe comes to you compliments of The Abbey, a brand-spankin’ new modern tavern that’s located in Chinatown.

The bartenders at The Abbey, Julia Homberg and Brad Lauzon, very kindly offered this cocktail recipe from their arsenal.

As you know, I’m super obsessed with bourbon-based drinks these days, and this one is lovely. The ginger beer gives it a spicy, warming finish. It’s a wonderful warming cocktail for cold winter days.

Holiday Bracer Cocktail

  • 2 oz Buffalo Trace Bourbon
  • 1/2 oz Fresh Cranberry Juice
  • 1/2 oz Fresh Squeezed Lime Juice
  • 3/4 oz Cinnamon Syrup (recipe follows)
  • Ginger Beer (I used Fentiman’s, but I also like local Dickie’s)
  • Star Anise (for garnish)

  1. Make the cinnamon syrup: in a small saucepan, place 1 cup of sugar and 1 cup of water. Add to this 2 cinnamon sticks. Heat the syrup until the sugar dissolves, and then remove from the heat and allow to cool. Finally, strain out the cinnamon sticks before using.
  2. To make the cocktail: combine all ingredients except the Ginger beer and Star Anise in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well, until the shaker frosts. Strain into a glass, and then top up with Ginger Beer to taste. Garnish with a Star Anise and serve.
